Dec. 22, 2014 – Somewhere in New Mexico.

Driving through New Mexico, the light was awesome. So, I pulled off the highway and took a few photos! Then drove straight into a snowstorm.

National Geographic – Innovators Project – Nick Watson: Bringing the Wilderness Solution to Vets

February 2, 2015 by Caroline

Last Spring, I shot a story, written by Mark Jenkins, for National Geographic online. The story is about Nick Watson, c0-founder of Veterans Expeditions, who was voted National Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year in 2014. Watson spearheads the group, which teaches vets technical wilderness skills while building powerful community.

The goal of this two-day trip, was to get young vets prepped for an upcoming attempt on Denali. The first day the team focused on technical rope and rescue skills. The second day, we attempted to summit Mt. Sherman. Sadly, we  had to turn around about 300 m. from the top due to weather. But the trip was a blast! At the end, I felt welcomed into this group of incredible individuals, even though I’m not a veteran. Trying hard in the mountains, in tough conditions, can break down all sorts of barriers. I love that!

As usual, Mark’s story is not to be missed! Please check it out! Good stuff. More photos here.

2013 Ultra Race of Champions – 100k

January 30, 2015 by Caroline

I had no reason to shoot UROC back in Sept. 2013, except to support a friend who had signed up for his first ultra race. I figured I’d shoot a little for posterity. Throughout the race, I had to remind myself, ‘this is fun, not work’. But, I gotta say, I love my job. It’s incredibly fun. Which can lead to a dangerous gray area. As much as I love photography, it’s important to disconnect from the camera and engage in the real-time moment, without trying to capture it. Without thinking about expression or composition or lighting. Like most things, it’s much harder than it sounds. Please enjoy these photos from UROC 2013! (Yes, I know it was awhile ago…)

Mirinda Carfrae, New Balance athlete and Ironman world champion.

This past fall, I was honored to photograph Mirinda Carfrae, the current Ironman Triathlon world champion, for New Balance. Carfrae, from Brisbane, Australia, holds the Ironman Championship course record at Kona, Hawaii (8:52:14, 2013). Just one of the impressive wins on her resume.

Mean Girls – New York Post

January 27, 2015 by Caroline

Lisa Hughes - Mean Girls

Aug. 14, 2015 – Lisa Hughes teaches a class she came up with called Mean Girls, at Colorado College, Colorado.

I recently shot and contributed reporting to an article for the New York Post about a class called Mean Girls, at Colorado College. The class is taught by English professor Lisa Hughes, who came up with the idea. Hughes examines the dynamic between women by exploring modern renditions of the classics in Tina Fey’s Mean Girls. Apparently mean girls have been around forever :)

Aug. 15, 2014 – Sunrise at the Leadville 100, Leadville, Colorado.

This past August Matt Trappe asked me to shoot the Leadville 100 with him for New Balance. I love shooting big trail races. You stake out a pretty spot. Fire away when the runners come by. Scurry to the next spot on the course. Repeat.

Climbers Against Cancer 2014 Calendar

January 26, 2015 by Caroline

You loved it, hated it or missed it. When CAC approached me to shoot the 2014 calendar, I had no idea it would be so controversial. One morning, I woke up to over 400 Facebook posts about the calendar, mostly negative. All publicity is good publicity, right?

Bosque del Apache

January 26, 2015 by Caroline

_DSC9898

I always assumed I lacked the patience to be a wildlife photographer. But I wanted to find out. The Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge, a few miles off the highway, near Socorro, New Mexico, was the place.

For an introvert like me, non-stop travel and people can be exhausting. After months of plane-hopping in Europe, I craved the desert. And I wanted to drive there.

Everything I needed was in my truck: water, food, camera gear, a sleeping bag. I relished the freedom. It felt so American. Here are some photos from the Bosque!

The Best Front Range Trail Runs

Where’s your next run? Stop by the Trident Booksellers and Cafe and pick up a copy of  The Best Front Range Trail Runs, the new, definitive, local trail guide by Peter Jones. The cover is an image I shot of my good friend Andy Wellman high above Crestone, Colorado, on one of those perfect fall days. Published by the Colorado Mountain Club Press.

Ascendance!

April 24, 2014 by Caroline

Last week I shot an Ascendance practice, led by founder Isabel Von Rittberg,  for an upcoming performance in Boulder, C.O. I showed up and the studio was completely dark except for a couple work lights. I didn’t want to use flash, so I decided to experiment with slow shutter speeds and movement while shooting. That said, I took a lot of bad photos. But I got a few interesting ones, too. Please enjoy!
