Emily and Alex

December 17, 2013 by Caroline

Emily and Alex’s wedding in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, was one of my favorites of the year! Loved their authentic, vintage style – from her dress to the handcrafted details, and the location was gorgeous. Here are a few of my favorite shots:

New Balance Shoot – Behind the Scenes

March 29, 2013 by Caroline

Every time I assist a photographer I learn something new, whether it’s a lighting or shooting technique, how to work with clients, or just getting to be fly on the wall with my camera. I often find myself shooting behind the scenes, which suits my photojournalistic style. Capturing the “off” moments – the ones that convey something about who the subject is when they aren’t performing, competing or “in front of the camera” – really excites me.  It’s challenging to capture these moments as they’re often gone before I have time to lift my camera or focus. I don’t tell people what to do, I don’t orchestrate anything, I just try to observe closely and anticipate what might happen next. Here is a selection of behind the scenes images I shot this summer while assisting Keith Ladzinski – a master at lighting, shooting AND working with clients – with a running shoot for New Balance in Colorado. Enjoy!

Sayulita, Mexico

March 28, 2013 by Caroline

I just spent a week in Mexico with a couple of girlfriends – the first real vacation I’ve taken in years. The best part about it was leaving my laptop at home. Unencumbered by technology, I was able to focus on the following three important things – surfing, eating tacos and shooting photos (for fun!) Here’s a selection of images from the trip – street portraits, soccer games, delicious food and beautiful light. Enjoy!

Rock and Ice: Life on Hold

March 13, 2013 by Caroline

This fall I worked on long feature for Rock and Ice about climbing holds, addiction and the life of hold shaper Ian Powell that’s appearing in the April issue right now! It was an intense few months but an incredible opportunity to grow as a writer and photographer. Thanks to Ian Powell and Andrew Bisharat and all the awesome editors at Rock and Ice for making this story possible.

Inside The Box

March 13, 2013 by Caroline

The past few months I’ve had a steady crush of assignments, hence the blog slacking. Recent work includes two new book projects with VeloPress: the Feed Zone Portables cook book, which just went to press a couple of days ago (late April release date?) and a book about CrossFit called Inside the Box which just came out. I feel lucky to work with such an amazing team of chefs, writers, editors, photographers, art directors, designers and publishers, in bringing these big projects to completion. Can’t wait to see the Feed Zone Portables in print!

Cafe Aion Cookbook!

December 14, 2012 by Caroline

For the past year, I’ve been working on a cookbook with Dakota Soifer, chef/owner of Cafe Aion in Boulder, Colorado and Andy Wellman of Greener Grass Publishing. The cookbook reflects Cafe Aion’s menu – Spanish and North African influenced tapas made from super local ingredients, and Soifer’s love for food that’s homegrown and shared. I’ve learned a ton in the past year, especially that a cookbook is a lot of work. And we all have full-time jobs. Since we shoot seasonally, we haven’t exactly been in a rush. But the word has gotten out! Denver Eater just wrote up a small piece on the cookbook. More to come as we get closer!

Educause 2012

November 27, 2012 by Caroline

I recently shot the Educause 2012 conference in Denver with fellow photographer Andy Mann and it was a blast. It’s always exciting to shoot a new subject and work with new people. And every shoot presents unique challenges. This one took place at the Colorado Convention Center in downtown Denver, and involved a lot of extremely low light situations where I was shooting at 6400 ISO, no flashes allowed. It can be frustrating but I love the unintrusive mobility of shooting in natural light, even if it sucks. And I love hunting down expressive moments. It keeps me on my toes! Here are a few shots from the conference.
